Christian Dior’s first female Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri has commissioned nine photographers, all women, to interpret individually her Spring/Summer 2017 womenswear collection for the House of Dior. Of these brilliant artists, Document spotlights Janette Beckman, whose investigative style reveals nebulous systems of creativity that result in the production of subcultural identities. Stateside since 1983, during the late ’70s and early ’80s the London-born Beckman followed the international punk movement, both east and west of the Atlantic: Her work rang prolifically in those days, which led to friendship and work collaborations with journalist and musician Vivien Goldman. In over three decades, as detailed by Beckman in the excerpt above, she has documented the greatest moments in 80s American Hip-Hop as well as today’s street art across urban Detroit.
