Ahead of her appearance at Barcelona’s Sónar Festival, the Melbourne-based DJ curates an eclectic track list born out of sonic remembering

Charlotte Frimpong, the Melbourne-based DJ better known as C.FRIM, is “cool” personified. She burst onto the scene with a standout Boiler Room x Sugar Mountain set from 2022, electrifying dancehall with a thumping mix of deep bass and pulsing rewinds, not to mention a stellar command of the room. Since then, she’s taken her talents across Europe, including an astonishing debut at the electronic music festival Dekmantel in Amsterdam last summer. At home in Australia, she has swiftly established a dedicated following, particularly within the QTBIPOC community through Dutty Worldwide, the party she co-found with fellow DJ and producer Mirasia.

As a DJ, she draws inspiration from a wide range of styles, mixing Afro-electronic beats with amapiano, a jazzy variant of house music that emerged in South Africa in the mid-2010s, all the while filtering them through the lens of her own cultural background as a member of the Ghanaian-Filipina diaspora.

This June, she’ll be bringing this rich tapestry of sounds to the stages of Sónar in Barcelona in a b2b set with BAMBII. In anticipation of the festival, C.FRIM curates this vibrant, summer-ready playlist for Document—get into it.

“Golden Boys” by Res
I picked up this record in a little vintage market in Seoul. My partner, Miri, and I had already been pumping this song on repeat all through Asia, so finding it on vinyl felt like it was meant to be.

“Dancehall Princess” by Massacorramaan
The perfect opening track to a DJ set. The gritty bass and raw vocals make it impossible not to move to.

“Poison Dart” by The Bug, Warrior Queen
A straight up classic. It hits with an intensity that is almost tangible, and Warrior Queen on the vocals is just too good. I’ve been rinsing this track in so many of my sets lately.

“Switzerland” by Lateena
During World Pride season in Sydney last year, we were driving between clubs when DJ Halfqueen grabbed the AUX cord and blessed us with Lateena on the car speakers. I’ve been obsessed ever since.

“Check 4 U” by Bovel
This track is a contender for my favorite song. It’s so timeless and honestly feels like a warm embrace. It’s one of those songs that I never get sick of listening to.

“Searching for Your Love” by Special Touch
My friend and Naarm DJ Sophie McAlister moved to Europe recently and had a massive garage sale of hundreds of records she was letting go of. I found this vinyl in one of her crates and have loved playing it when I have friends over for cook-ups.

“Rider Girl” by Blaqstarr
My final destination of my Euro tour in 2022 was Milos, Greece, and the highlight was riding around on a quad bike with my partner playing this track on repeat. Whenever I hear this song it brings me back to the island.
