Gill fills Document in on the inspiration behind Fall/Winter 2023's most striking looks—from forest raves, to hat hair, to club kids in the morning after

Gary Gill takes an irreverent approach to hair-styling, having come of age in the dead center of Brighton’s punk community. His work is artistic, sculptural; it juxtaposes with the sheen of high fashion in a way that’s stark and refreshing. Marked by the codes of counterculture, his aesthetic has been called anti-glamor, cross-gender, theatrical.

Between menswear and womenswear seasons, it’s been a busy few weeks. Gill was called upon to generate looks for Dries Van Noten, Acne Studios, Hermès, Diesel, and plenty of other labels seeking to balance their collections with his signature off-the-cuff styling. Here, Gill takes Document behind the curtain, divulging the inspiration behind his latest shows—from forest raves, to hat hair, to club kids in the morning after.
