The makeup artist takes Document backstage at Kim Jones’s Fall/Winter 2023 show, nodding to punk’s romance as inspired by the wardrobe of Delfina Delettrez Fendi

For Fall/Winter 2023, Kim Jones drew influence from the wardrobe of Delfina Delettrez Fendi—a fourth-generation descendant of the founder of the Italian house, and since 2020, its artistic director of jewelry. “The first day that Delfina walked into work, she was wearing blue and brown, and I thought she looked so great,” said Jones. “It’s deconstructed, but luxurious. There’s a little nod to punk, and my admiration for DIY, but moved on towards something chic.”

Peter Phillips—creative and image director for Christian Dior Makeup—was thus tasked with the challenge of emulating Delettrez Fendi’s one-of-a-kind approach to beauty. Complementing the models’ cut-out and asymmetrical knitwear, their square-shouldered suit jackets, their leather and lace and laced-up boots were smoky eyeliner, elongated brows, and glossed lips. Reflects Phillips, “We wanted a look that was punky and soft, almost romantic,” in keeping with the characteristic elegance of Jones’s latest collection. For Document, he shares snapshots of his process backstage, capturing the essence of house’s latest muse.
