In a Mercer Street loft, Jason Wu showed a closely curated 18-look offering for Fall 2019. The model-free presentation took heavy inspiration from Wu’s second-ever fragrance, Velvet Rouge, which debuted alongside the garments. Guests walked through a immersive booth highlighting the new scent before entering the main exhibition space—a format closer to an art show opening than typical fashion week offerings. The bright vermillion reds in the collection played more directly upon the rose notes of Velvet Rouge. Recurring delicate, cascading pleats, and sculptural tulle also made subtle nods to botanical shapes. As more and more designers seek alternatives to the runway, Wu’s presentation offered a particularly lush and sensual articulation of his vision.
